Registration and pre-enrollment for 2026 - 2027 opens on February 2, 2026 and closes on March 25, 2026.

Important Dates

• Our Open House is scheduled for February 25, 2026. Drop in any time between 5:30 - 7:00 PM and tour the school! The Open House does not include any information sessions. 
• Our Cogito info session will be held virtually on February 3, 2026 from 1:00 - 2:00 PM. This presentation covers information about the Cogito program and our admin team will be available to answer your questions. You can join the Google Meet here.
• Our French Immersion info session will be held virtually on February 10, 2026 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm. This presentation covers information about the French Immersion program and our admin team will be available to answer your questions. You can join the Google Meet here.
• The Cogito Kindergarten Meeting for Success will be held in person on March 5, 2026 from 2:30 - 4:00 pm.

Cogito Registration FAQs

What is random selection?
Following the end of the registration period, if there are more Cogito applications than there is space, the school will follow a random selection process. Families will be notified of random selection results between April 13 - April 17, 2026.

What happens if my child is not accepted through random selection?
Applicants will remain at their current school if already enrolled. They may also attend their designated school, or any other Division school with space remaining. You do not need to register again; simply contact your second choice of school and they will let you know if they can accept your child. Please note that other Cogito sites will likely have undergone random selection and will not be able to accept transfers.

Can I add my child to a waitlist?
The Cogito waitlist for 2026 - 2027 opens after random selection is complete and closes in September 2026. No further students will be accepted into 2026 - 2027 Cogito classes after September 2026. Students can only be added to the waitlist while it is open.

Are there any tests or requirements to apply?
Cogito kindergarten applicants are required to participate in the Meeting for Success. This is an opportunity for prospective students to engage in age-appropriate tasks presented in a Cogito setting while being observed by the teachers. It is recommended to submit your child's registration prior to the meeting so we have them on file.

Cogito applicants in Grades 1 through 6 will be asked to email a copy of their most recent report card to the school. It is expected that applicants are learning at grade level.

How many seats do you have available?
The number of seats available in each Cogito grade level depends on how many current students are returning for the new school year. We will not have an estimated number of available Cogito seats until late March, when pre-enrollment is nearing completion.

Current School Year

For the 2025 - 2026 school year, Richard Secord School is full in:

• all classes in the Cogito program from Kindergarten to Grade 6. We will no longer accept enrollment requests for these grade levels in this program. The Cogito waitlist closes on September 5, 2025. No further students will be accepted into 2025 - 2026 Cogito classes after September 5. 
• Kindergarten and Grade 4 classes in the French Immersion program. We will no longer accept enrolment requests for these grade levels in this program.
• Grade 3 and Grade 4 classes in the Regular program. We will no longer accept enrollment requests for these grade levels in this program.

If you are new to Edmonton Public Schools and are registering for the current school year, you must register online. Please note your child must be residing in Edmonton at the time of registration.
